Winter/Spring Workshop Series

Wooden Spoon Carving- March 21, 2010

Learn to make a spoon from a piece of firewood using axe, chisel and knife.  We will discuss form and shape while working with the grain and type of wood.  Proper axemanship and use of carving knives and gouges will be stressed.  Spoon blanks will be available for those with weaker hands or simply for a head start. 

Cost:  $40.00 per person   Spoon blanks $15.00

 

Black Ash Basketry- March 6, 2010  

This one day workshop takes place at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center in Ashland, Wi.  We will discuss the harvesting process, styles and functions of baskets, stories and more while preparing the raw materials and weaving a small basket to take home.  A visual representation will be on site, including a variety of basket shapes and styles, reference material and current threat information (EAB) for further enhancement.  

One day cost: $40.00 per person     Material fee: $25.00 per kit

 

 

Build Your Own Toboggan- Jan 9-10, 2010

For this 2 day workshop, participants will spend the first day learning about the type of wood being used while preparing their staves for steam bending.  For assembly on the 2nd day, participants will attach the cross bars using hand peened copper rivets along with rope and any other finishing touches for their 7'-8' toboggan. 

Cost: $75.00 per person     Materials fee: $50.00

  

Build Your Own Snowshoes- Jan 22-25, 2010 

Participants will learn the fundamentals of "green woodworking" skills while making these Ojibwe style snowshoes.  Staves will be worked with axe, and crooked knife. Steam bending staves into jigs, nylon lacing and finishing to follow.  Handouts and in depth discussion of styles, uses, history and stories will be shared during this 4-day workshop. If you can't make the 4 day from scratch workshop, come for the last 2 days and buy pre-bent kits and put together and laceup your snowshoes. 

Cost: $150.00 per person for the 4 day and $75.00 for the 2 day   

Materials fee: $25.00/nylon   $110.00/babiche(rawhide)    

Pre-bent kits: $100.00 includes lacing for the 2 day workshop

 

Carve a Canoe or Kayak Padddle- scheduled if interest...

Participants will learn about older/simpler techniques of woodworking while carving thier own paddle out of ash, birch, or spuce. For this two day workshop, we will be using an axe to rough out the paddle then switch to a crooked knife to finish it off.  This will be an intense workshop.  Please contact us if there is interest.

Cost: $100.00 per person

This cost includes all materials and tools.
